Metals and Plant Ltd was contracted to undertake the demolition / dismantling of an unsafe pedestrian link bridge over the river Sheaf in Sheffield.
Due to the river and the very limited access / egress to the bridge from the main road, which was via a small roller shutter door, across a courtyard and then through a single door to the rear building. The works were extremely challenging and potentially dangerous.
Working closely with the Environment Agency over a three-month period, Metals and Plant’s highly experienced engineers were able to formulate an action plan and safe systems of work, that protected the river and its associated habitat, while also allowing the works to proceed safely by protecting their engineers engaged in the works.
Utilising specialised robotic demolition, the link bridge was dismantled / demolished in a methodical manner which allowed the main structure of the bridge to keeps its structural integrity throughout and avoid an uncontrolled collapse. This also eliminated the hazard of hand arm vibration which operatives involved in the works could of been subjected too, if hand held demolition had of been utilised.
All works were completed to the high standards of the Environment Agency, on programme and most importantly safely.
