Metals and Plant Ltd were commissioned to undertake the full decommissioning and mechanical strip out of the former testing laboratory at Leeds University. This was a complex project requiring particular attention to detail for numerous reasons, the main ones being live services running alongside the redundant equipment to be removed. This not only presented obvious electrocution hazards to our onsite engineers, but also the potential loss of power for large parts of the university, either being catastrophic. Large amounts of equipment needed to be decommissioned and decontaminated due to various chemicals having been used over the years. Plus a high percentage of the equipment to be removed was powered by natural gas, this required purging to help reduce the potential of an explosion or build up of gases in a confined space that might affect our engineers.

As with any live University the interface with students and lecturers is inevitable, especially when removing large amount of materials from the work area / site and then more importantly off campus. If not managed correctly this does leave the potential for accidents / confliction, but due to Metals and Plant having undertaken countless contracts in live University, Schools, shopping centres and industrial businesses to name but a few, we are more than capable of finding solutions to each individual clients needs.
