M&P Ltd was contracted to undertake the demolition / dismantling of a roof top plant room at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.
The hospitals concerns were minimising disruption to the hospital’s occupants in-relation to noise, vibration and dust. Along with added concerns with how M&P anticipated to remove all waste generated form the works, due to the access to the roof / plant room being extremely restricted via numerous stairs and through the centre of the hospital. Additionally, the roof structure had very limited loading capability, so overloading of the roof was another major concern in-relation to robotic demolition and storage of processed material.
On this occasion hand demolition was the only method M&P were able to utilise. Through tried and tested safe systems of work and as always, our site engineer’s attention to detail, all of the hospitals concerns were addressed. Likewise, other hazards which were present such as HAV’s (hand arm vibration) and manual handling.
The plant room was initially mechanically stripped of all redundant equipment, then the wooden roof construction was carefully dismantled. The remaining brick and cast concrete walls were then methodically processed and demolished. With waste strategically positioned on the roof and removed periodically throughout the works via numerous out of hours contract crane lifts from a live service road adjacent the building. During the contract crane lifts M&P had to secure the area and undertake a road closure, while implementing necessary traffic management systems, thus allowing the hospital infrastructure to function as normal.
All works were completed ahead of schedule, incident free and without disruption to the hospital.
